Mandy Murphy on From A to Double D / by Declan Maloney Drummond

What's your show about?

From A to Double D is the story of one young woman’s life, one bra at a time. While in a dream-like state, Devon Hayes (23) has become the star of her own auction. With the help of fast-talking auctioneer Don, Devon auctions off her bras from sizes A through Double D while the audience bids for more than just a souvenir. With every bra, we visit a memory in Devon's life watching her grow up while facing the obstacles put in her way as a young millennial woman who developed breasts before so many other things.

How did it get to SheNYC?

I began working on From A to Double D over five years ago when I was still in college and as someone who believes that a play is never truly done, I have continued to learn more about these characters every day since. The play was first produced in 2014 atTexas State University in San Marcos, TX under the direction of Neil Patrick Stewart and produced by Jim Price and I have been submitting and searching for it’s next chance to breath ever since. Last year, I was lucky enough to be cast in the SheNYC Festival as an actor in an all-female production of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure where I had the pleasure of working with a plethora of incredible female artists. I was particularly inspired by the Executive Producer of the festival, Danielle DeMatteo who is an unstoppable female force in theater who saw the unsettling statistics of how few female playwrights are being produced in NYC and did something about it. I couldn’t wait to submit my own work and when I was told that my piece was chosen as one of the scripts for this year’s festival I was not only super pumped but proud to be a part of something bigger than just me; a larger female voice that is making strides to have all of our works heard on the big stage. This script is very near and dear to my heart and I couldn’t have found a better place for it’s first production in NYC.

What's your casting and rehearsal process been like?

I knew from the get-go that I wanted to play the lead in this show. I have had productions and readings done of my work but this will be the first time that I take the plunge into my words in this way. It has been very exciting and honestly, a little scary but the adventure has brought me to an understanding of my characters that I didn’t realize I could have. As for the rest of the cast, SheNYC was gracious enough to set up an initial casting call for us to see a lot of great talent. From there, our director Ryan Bovée, our assistant director Anna Watts, our Associate Producer Ari Conte and I narrowed down a list for a day of callbacks. Based on the talent that we saw we found the rest of our fierce cast which includes Bryn Packard, Lexie Speirs, Tepper Saffren and Roberta Ahrens. We’ve been on our feet for a few rehearsals now and it has been an inspiring blast to see everyone’s hearts and minds coming together to tell this story in our own unique way. Can’t wait to see where the process take us next.
